Natural Herding Ability

June 16th, 2010

Natural herding ability is a term used to describe how a cowdog knows to keep cattle bunched together when fetching them to you. Some dogs are just naturally good at it. Some dogs seem to learn it over time and practice. Still some never seem to get it.

A cowdog will usually show how much natural herding ability he heas early on in his training.Although it might not show up much until his adrenalin slows down The ones that are naturally gifted at it will instinctively get on the balance point of the cattle and keep them gathered up without having to be told.

A dog doesn't have to have natural herding ability to be a good cowdog. You might just have to help him more by giving him more commands.
